Menstrual hygiene is about protecting women’s dignity and well-being during their cycles, not just keeping them clean.

Menstrual hygiene is not just about cleanliness; it’s about ensuring the well-being and dignity of women during their menstrual cycles. Here are five essential practices that empower women to manage their periods with confidence and comfort:

  1. Choose the Right Products:It’s crucial to select menstrual products that match your comfort level and lifestyle. Whether you prefer pads, tampons, menstrual cups, or period panties, find what works best for you. Experiment with different options to discover what provides the most comfort and protection. Remember to change your menstrual products regularly, ideally every 4–6 hours, to maintain cleanliness and prevent odour.
  2. Dispose Responsibly:Proper disposal of used menstrual products is essential for both hygiene and environmental protection. Wrap used items in biodegradable or disposable bags before disposing of them in designated bins. Avoid flushing menstrual products down the toilet, as it can lead to blockages and environmental pollution.
  3. Prioritize Personal Hygiene:During your period, pay extra attention to personal hygiene to prevent infections and maintain comfort. Wash your genital area with mild soap and water regularly, especially before changing your menstrual product. Pat dry gently with a clean towel and avoid using harsh products or douching, as they can disrupt the natural balance of your body.
  4. Stay Hydrated and Nourished:Proper hydration and nutrition are essential for managing menstrual symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and mood swings. Drink plenty of water and consume a balanced diet rich in iron and vitamins. Opt for hydrating fluids and foods such as leafy greens, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins to support your body’s needs during menstruation.
  5. Educate and Empower:Break the silence surrounding menstruation by educating others, including younger girls and boys, about menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. Encourage open conversations about periods and dispel myths and taboos related to menstruation. Empower women and girls to make informed choices about their bodies and menstrual health, fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable discussing menstrual hygiene.

By incorporating these simple yet vital practices into your routine, you can navigate your menstrual cycle with confidence and dignity. Empowerment in every cycle begins with prioritising menstrual hygiene and fostering awareness and understanding in our communities. Together, we can create a world where every woman feels empowered to manage her period with ease and comfort.
