Lack of sleep can severely impact bodily functions.

Rajkummar Rao’s wife, Patralekhaa, recently shared that her husband would sometimes go without sleep for 48 hours.

Often, people go above and beyond to fulfil their professional commitments while putting their health on the back burner. Rajkummar Rao’s wife, actress Patralekhaa, recently revealed that her husband frequently endures sleepless nights. Despite her urging him to prioritise rest, she explained,“There is a love and passion he has for his art from the moment he wakes up till he goes to sleep.”

“There are sleepless nights. He sometimes doesn’t sleep for 48 hours, no matter what I tell him. Don’t do it; it’s detrimental to health. But he doesn’t know any better,” said the actress during her interview with Fever FM.

In this case, Patralekhaa is absolutely right. Not getting proper sleep daily can really have detrimental effects on one’s body. Hence, it is always advised that a person sleeps for 8-9 hours daily, which can lead to severe consequences. Here’s what happens when one doesn’t get proper sleep.

Sleep deprivation impacts bodily functions

Sleep deprivation can lead to loss of memory and concentration, mood disturbances, increased anxiety, poor judgement, and poor decision-making. It might even weaken the immune system, increasing the chances of cardiovascular diseases. Months back, a Hyderabad-based neurologist, Dr Sudhir Kumar, shared a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account to talk about the effects of sleep deprivation.

In his post, he mentioned that losing one hour of sleep can take up to 4 days to recover from it fully. Meanwhile, in a reply to one of the netizens, he also suggested the average daily amount of sleep one must get according to their age. Check out his post:

Lack of sleep increases appetite

A poor sleep cycle leads to excessive secretion of a hormone called Ghrelin, which makes people hungry. The Indian Express quoted a doctor who said, “One will feel hungry and may overeat. It is imperative to sleep well for at least 8-9 hours every day. If you’re experiencing sleep difficulties, consult a healthcare professional for guidance. Remember, sleep is not a luxury but a necessity for a healthy life.”

Here’s what you can do for a good night’s sleep

Maintaining a fixed bedtime is crucial, as it helps regulate the body’s clock properly. To signal that the body is relaxing, one can indulge in specific nighttime rituals like warm baths, meditation or reading books. Most importantly, avoid screens of all kinds just before going to sleep.
